Do you listen actively or passively to music?

Are you an active listener or passive listener of music? What's the difference?

An active listener will listen to music with a view to understanding it more deeply, hearing the various themes, melodies, harmonies, transitions and understanding the overall structure.

A passive listener just hears it and that is all. It may sound good or be catchy but one who passively listens will miss out on what makes a piece of music so moving and beautiful.

By actively listening to music you can learn a lot from each piece of music you hear and it can influence your own compositions as well.

What is colored hearing?

What is colored hearing? Is it the ability to hear a color when musical notes are played? Not exactly but for some this does happen.

Colored hearing is actually another phrase for perfect pitch or absolute pitch. It's the ability to distinguish tones by how they sound, the richness, the fullness and everything else which makes each note unique. It is not the same as relative pitch but is a deeper form of ear training. Actually both skills are essential to every musician.

How do you learn these skills? The following courses will help:

Relative Pitch

Knowing how to hear music and enjoy it and understand it is a very cherished and coveted skill. Not everyone has it and while most would like to, they have no idea where to begin.

The answer is by developing relative pitch. This is the ability to understand and know by ear the distance between notes in music. This skill is valuable no matter what instrument you play or if you sing or even the genre of music you are involved with. It is a universal skill which every musician needs.

What to listen for in music

Whether you play an instrument or not, it's important to know how to listen to music. Why? For one thing, it will help you to enjoy music more when you know what's going on. One thing that will help you is to understand harmony and melody. The harmony is the transitioning of chords and chordal structures and the melody is the note which stands out and is usually the highest note.

This is simple to understand but for some it's hard to recognize by ear. This is where ear training comes in. Ear training will help you to unlock what's going on in any piece of music so you can follow along with or without a musical score!!

Perfect Pitch

When learning how to hear music more deeply, one of the most valuable skills you can acquire is Perfect Pitch or Absolute Pitch.

Perfect Pitch is basically the ability to recognize the pitch of any note without relation to another pitch. It's the ability to deeply hear any note and hear inside it. For example, the note C sounds mild and soft compared with an F# which sounds more vibrant and harsh. Each of the 12 notes have their own color or sound or characteristic.

How can you learn to distinguish between the 12 notes? A great course is the Perfect Pitch ear training course. You can find out more about it here:
